We worked with Catch22 to deliver a full evaluation of The Hive, Camden’s youth wellbeing hub for 16–24-year-olds experiencing, or at risk of, poor mental health. The evaluation combined quantitative analysis of service data and survey responses, as well as cost saving analysis, with in-depth qualitative research involving young people, staff, partners and commissioners. It captured both the measurable impact of The Hive and the distinctive features of its holistic, youth-led model, including its integrated Social Hub, one-to-one wellbeing support, employment advice, sexual health provision and wider partnership approach.
A particular aspect of the evaluation that policy-makers valued, was the innovative costed case studies approach to identifying potential avoidance of statutory mental health costs, particularly crisis and inpatient services.
The final report demonstrated strong outcomes for young people, including improved confidence, reduced isolation, stronger support networks, greater optimism and better ability to manage mental health. It also provided Catch22 with clear evidence of The Hive’s wider value within Camden’s mental health system, as well as the economic value, and practical recommendations for future development and replication
The report was presented at the Catch22 policy round table, with recommendations by the Head of CYP Mental Health at NHS England to submit the evaluation to the current call for evidence for the Government’s National Mental Health Strategy. It has been shared widely including through the CYP Mental Health Coalition’s newsletter.
